Nicholas Peron's career as an artist began in Albuquerque when he was a student at Valley High School in the early 1960s.
Under the tutelage of the late artist, Frank Walker, who was on the faculty and a mentor, Peron was in a high school art
show judged by the late Raymond Jonson. Artist, gallery director, a founder of the American "Transcendentalist"
movement, and Professor Emeritus at the University of New Mexico, Professor Jonson became interested in Peron's work
and continued to encourage him in the painting. In 1974, Jonson honored him with a one-man show at his prestigious
Gallery on the University of New Mexico campus.
In the 1980's, painting became too costly and environmentally unfriendly to Peron. Influenced by box artist Joseph Cornell,
and painter & mixed media artist Ellsworth Kelly, Peron began making box art and assemblages with his collection of
almost everything - finds from ghost towns, railroad tracks, flea markets, dumpsters, and the streets.
Titles of Peron's pieces are integral to the interpretation of the works, with many of the works themselves being a reflection
of, and/or comment about our environment and culture. Since his work is made almost 100% from recycled materials,
meticulously connected, Nicholas considers himself to be an "Environmental" artist.
